GONCALO ALVES VENEER – Flat Cut

 (Astronium fraxinifolium)

Other Names:  TIGERWOOD,  Brazilian Koa, Muirtacatiara – Brazil  Source:   Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico.

Color:  Reddish-orange to a deep reddish brown background with dark vein striping, which give it a tiger-like look and richly mottled and with dark brown streaks and spots similar to rosewood.

Pattern:  Is fine to medium and uniform, with a fine grain, varying from straight to interlocked and wavy.

Characteristics:  Heavy, hard and dense.

Uses: Because of its durability, strength, and resistance to harsh weather, it is commonly used for outdoor decking.  Tigerwood’s unique beauty also makes it a worthy choice for wood turning objects, fine furniture, and veneer.

Tigerwood!  It doesn’t get much more exotic than this!

It is brownish orange with dark stripes resembling tiger stripes, hence its name.  The color darkens over time to a deeper orange color, especially when exposed to sunlight. The use of a UV Inhibitor will prolong this rich color.  Or, for those that like the silver-grey patina color, you can forgo this process and let it age naturally while still maintaining its integrity.
